Gold-filled jewelry has a thick layer of real gold bonded to a base metal. It has far more gold than plated jewelry, so it won't wear through with normal use.
Over time, yes. It is normal and easy to fix. Wipe it with a polishing cloth and store it dry, away from air, when you can.
