ABOUT ANUNA PEARL
Anuna Pearls are cultivated on the picturesque Atoll of Takaroa, located 370 miles away from the Island of Tahiti. With a population of fewer than 1,000 residents, Takaroa is a small community blessed with an abundance of wildlife and a stunning ecosystem. We consider ourselves fortunate to call this remarkable place our home.
Our co-founder, Taumata Temanaha, hails from a long line of pearl farmers and has been cultivating pearls at his family's ancestral home on Takaroa for years. Through tried and tested farming practices, Taumata ensures that the Tahitian Black Pearls produced are of the highest quality, while also having minimal impact on the island's beautiful ecosystem.
Co-founder Joel Whitt developed a deep appreciation for the island and its people during his time living there in the 90s. Anuna Pearl was born in 2018 when Joel and Taumata reconnected on a trip back to the island. Together, they decided to revive the Temanaha family farm and thus, Anuna Pearl was established.
All Pearls sold by Anuna are cultured and harvested at our family farm, so you know you are getting a true authentic Tahitian Pearl.
ABOUT TAHITIAN PEARLS
Tahitian pearls, also known as black pearls, are renowned for their unique, dark color and lustrous shine. These pearls are produced by the black-lipped oyster, which is primarily found in the waters of French Polynesia, including the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, and the Tuamotu Archipelago.
Tahitian pearls come in a variety of colors, ranging from light gray to deep black, with undertones of green, blue, and purple. The variation in color is caused by the pearl's unique nacre, which reflects light in a way that creates an iridescent effect.
Cultivating Tahitian pearls is a delicate process that requires skill and patience. The process begins with a technician surgically implanting a bead nucleus into the oyster, which then secretes layers of nacre around the nucleus to form a pearl. The oyster is then carefully monitored for several months until the pearl has developed to the desired size and quality.
